alex attias got his start in back in ’88 playing funk, house, jazz, and disco, as well as producing under various monikers such as mustang, freedom soundz or beatless. moving to london in ’97 he started his ‘visions’ label and found himself at the epicentre of the emerging west london ‘broken beat’ scene which grew around his studio at goya. releases on people, planet e, ubiquity, neroli, archive and compost followed, as well as remixes for incognito, 4hero, ennio morricone, sun ra, art blakey, roni size and laurent garnier among others.

london based experimental publisher split music has rapidly gained a unique reputation for its expertise in placing music in audiovisual projects, from hollywood movie trailers like blade runner 2049, the dark tower & mother to brand films for globally recognised designers adidas, dior & puma. this reputation was affirmed this year upon winning the prestigious golden trailer award in l.a. (for the use of these hidden hands music in the brutal raw worldwide trailer). now, from their headquarters at londons live music epicentre village underground, they have launched their latest project: the research label. this new label will showcase the artists they represent by challenging them to push the boundaries of their production process to new levels.

earlier this year ellen allien dropped her seventh solo lp, nost, an ode to the music that has been at the epicentre of her career, and life, for over two decades. the album provided a link between the past and the future, blending influences from the very early days of berlin techno with contemporary sounds and, of course, a vision of the future. now we have the first batch of specially commissioned remixes, taking ellen’s original works in a new direction with four artists delivering their own interpretations of the music featured on the lp. emmanuel top, rod, k-hand and skudge are the first ensemble of techno titans to administer the remix treatment to tracks from nost

ivanlatyshev is a record producer and dj with more than 10-years experience, having grown up in russias cultural epicentre of st petersburg. developing a love for deep house, the young producer has been releasing his perfectly-realised club tunes on labels such as toolroom, and now provides us with a second outing on dessous recordings. the art of flying ep presents two original tracks and a pair of remixes of the lead cut. the original art of flying is quite a statement a jazzy, swingy beat introduces the track, before solidifying around punchy 4/4 groove. restless synths drift in and out resulting in a track that is both exceptionally funky and deeply wonky - topped off with a killer spoken word vocal. the ever-dependable eddie fowlkes steps up on remix duties and supplies a more jacking interpretation, adding a filthy bassline on his fly mix. the same track also gets a crazy dub rework which expands the space within the track and strips it down for maximum club effect.

obbatuké are an 8-piece rumba group from santiago de cuba, lead by renowned quinto player carlos guerra. the band are mainstays at the casa del caribe, widely regarded as the epicentre for the eastern rumba scene.
rumba is a percussive-led genre descended from africa which was formed when mixed with spanish influences in the ports of havana and matanzas.
as innovators in the genre, obbatuké have been a huge inspiration to the manana project, and were involved in collaborations at this year’s event with plaid, quantic, nicolas jaar and london based breakthrough act, ariwo. this particular session was recorded at castlesound studios in edinburgh on the band’s first trip outside of cuba. it features three different sub-genres of rumba and an extended yoruba bata piece called orun seco.

paula chalup is one of the most important figures of the underground brazilian electronic scene, and has been at the epicentre of each of the revolutions throughout these almost 20 years down the road. in a musical symbiosis with producer and multi - instrumentalist lucas parisi, a member of sao paulo laptop orchestra an experimental electronic music project, which was presented at the virada cultural in 2011 and file (international festival of electronic language). together they form the iao yoruba word that stand for initiate. building soundscapes that lead to a spiritual journey.
